In Sunday’s (3/6) Courier-Journal (Louisville, Kentucky), Jenna Esarey writes, “As part of their Classical Concert Series, around 150 members of the Louisville Youth Orchestra performed at New Albany High School on Sunday. In its 52nd season, the youth orchestra offers 350 area young people an opportunity to hone their craft and perform in public multiple times per season. ‘We’re absolutely thrilled to be here,” said Melody Welsh, executive director of the youth orchestra, who has been with the organization for 25 years, 20 as executive director. … Open to young people ages 5 through 21, the orchestra’s season follows the school calendar. Rehearsing on Sundays, each group performs four to five times per season. While it is a Louisville organization, auditions are open to anyone in the greater Louisville area. … Sunday’s performance saw four of the organization’s six groups perform: the Concert Orchestra, Serenade Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble and the Horizons Flute Ensemble, new to the youth orchestra this season. … The orchestra attracts members from all walks of life, and the organization provides $25,000 worth of scholarships each year to help those who have difficulty raising the $350 membership fee.”
