The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra’s May 1 concert will feature the world premiere of The Universe Cantos, commissioned from local composer Peter Fischer, an associate professor of music at Texas Tech University. The concert, the orchestra’s third 2020-21 masterworks program, will be performed for an in-person audience at the recently opened Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences and will also include Holst’s The Planets accompanied by images and video footage from NASA. In a press release, Lubbock Symphony President and CEO Galen Wixson said Fischer’s Universe Cantos was “inspired by outer space.”
