A report in Friday’s (9/2) Register-Guard (Eugene, Oregon) states, “The Eugene Symphony’s executive director, Paul Winberg, will resign at the end of September to take a job running a music festival in Chicago, the symphony announced on Thursday. Winberg, who took over his post with the symphony in 2004, will head up the Grant Park Music Festival, the nation’s only free, city-funded outdoor classical summer music festival. ‘On behalf of the entire board of directors, we congratulate Paul on his new appointment,’ said Mary Ann Hanson, president of the symphony’s board. ‘We are so proud of the tremendous growth and accomplishments that have taken place these last eight years.’ … Under Winberg’s leadership, the symphony saw a 24 percent increase in the orchestra’s subscriber base, nearly a doubling of single ticket sales, the introduction of all-ages programming, an annual free outdoor summer concert and the expansion of the symphony’s subscription concert series. … The symphony board has begun the process of putting together a search committee to find a replacement for Winberg and will announce an interim management plan before his departure, a symphony spokeswoman said.”
