In Friday’s (3/11) Modesto Bee (California), Lisa Millegan Renner writes, “Looking back, Marie Gallo believes the timing of the Gallo Center for the Arts couldn’t have been better. The $40 million facility opened in downtown Modesto in September 2007, right before the economy crashed and masses of homes went into foreclosure. … Gallo, 74, will be honored with the lifetime achievement award March 19 at the Stanislaus Arts Council’s Excellence in Arts Awards banquet at Seasons in Modesto. Her biggest accomplishment is spearheading the 10-year effort to build the Gallo Center. Her family provided$10 million to start an endowment and has offered continuing financial support. … She started playing piano at age 6 in a family that had great appreciation for the arts. … She also loves the Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s pops series, directed by Steven Reineke, who also serves as pops conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and director of the New York Pops.” The Modesto Symphony performs at the Gallo Center.
