Winners of this year’s Musical America awards have been announced, with Gustavo Dudamel, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, topping the list as Musician of the Year. The other winners are David Lang, composer of the year; pipa player Wu Man, instrumentalist of the year; mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, vocalist of the year; and José Antonio Abreu—founder of the Venezuelan music-education program El Sistema—educator of the year. The awards will be presented in a ceremony at Lincoln Center on December 6. Musical America’s annual awards were established in 1960 and recognize artistic excellence and achievement in the arts. Musical America is publisher of the International Directory of the Performing Arts and the MusicalAmerica.com website.
