In Dallas, musicians have joined together for CancerBlows, a concert and fundraiser organized to honor Ryan Anthony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s principal trumpet and a former Canadian Brass member, while raising money for cancer research. Two years ago, Anthony was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a terminal cancer of the bone marrow, but he has responded well to treatment and is currently in remission. The March 4 concert will feature trumpet players Doc Severinsen, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Loughnane (of the band Chicago), and Canadian Brass alumni Ronnie Romm, Jens Lindenmann, Joe Burgstaller, and Anthony himself. They will join members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jeff Tyzik and Robert Moody, and the UNT One O’Clock Lab Band at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The program will include the last movement of Respighi’s Pines of Rome, a multi-trumpet Carnival of Venice backed by members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and Tommy Dorsey’s “Well, Git It.” More information about the event, including a photo gallery and Ryan Anthony’s story, can be seen here.
