When New York’s Carnegie Hall hosts the benefit concert “Beethoven for the Indus Valley” today (1/31), it will feature Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony performed by musicians from many of the world’s top orchestras. The orchestra musicians, who are donating their services, will feature principal artists from orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, MET Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Youth Orchestra of the Americas, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; also performing will be students and faculty from music schools including the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. Also donating their time for the event are soprano Laquita Mitchell, mezzo-soprano Margaret Lattimore, tenor Sean Panikkar, and bass Morris Robinson. Proceeds from the concert—organized by Music for Life International Inc., the American Pakistan Foundation, and conductor George Mathew—will go toward rebuilding communities affected by Pakistan’s devastating 2010 floods. George Mathew’s previous benefit concerts at Carnegie Hall include “Mahler for the Children of AIDS” in 2009, “Requiem for Darfur” in 2007, and “Beethoven’s Ninth for South Asia” in 2006.
