Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero will open the Nashville Symphony’s 2019-20 season at Schermerhorn Symphony Center on September 12 with Adolphus Hailstork’s An American Port of Call, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, and Samuel Barber’s Piano Concerto with soloist Garrick Ohlsson. The orchestra will live-record five performances of music by American composers during the season, for future release on Naxos: Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem with the Nashville Symphony Chorus; John Adams’s My Father Knew Charles Ives; Brad Warnaar’s Cornet Concerto; Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto; and Horatio Parker’s Organ Concerto. Also planned are a Beethoven “birthday bash” in February marking the composer’s 250th birthday in 2020, plus Andrew Norman’s Spiral and Augusta Read Thomas’s Brio. Leonard Slatkin will conduct a program of Haydn, Dukas, Debussy, and Yet Another Set of Variations on Paganini by multiple American composers. In January, Guerrero will conduct Poland’s NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is also music director, in Nashville. Eight pops programs will include country singer Trisha Yearwood in her first performances with the orchestra in October. The orchestra will offer four sensory-friendly family programs as well as four jazz programs and five film screenings with live music.
