For its “Cosmic Designs” program on January 27 and 28, Maryland’s National Philharmonic will perform Debussy’s La Mer and Holst’s The Planets, accompanied by new images from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio depicting the solar system and Earth’s seas. Music Director Piotr Gajewski will lead both concerts, which will include discussions of the images by planetary scientists Gina Dibraccio and Geronimo Villanueva. Philharmonic Associate Conductor Victoria Gau will lead separate, free pre-concert lectures for adults. At a NASA Chat for young people before each performance, NASA scientists will answer questions about the solar system and the space agency’s latest missions and discoveries. The concerts will be performed in Strathmore’s Concert Hall, where the lobby will showcase artwork created by young people in response to The Planets and La Mer.
