The National Philharmonic, based in North Bethesda, Maryland, announced that it has received the Washington Area Music Association’s 2010 Wammie Award in the category of Classical Orchestral Ensemble. For 25 years the annual Washington Area Music Awards have recognized career achievements in 24 categories that include, choral, bluegrass, country, cabaret/musical theater, folk, jazz, and Latin. Previous classical winners include the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, National Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, and Fairfax Symphony. The National Philharmonic is ensemble in residence at the Music Center at Strathmore and also provides music education in tandem with the Music Center at Strathmore and Montgomery County Public Schools. The Philharmonic was created from a 2003 merger of the National Chamber Orchestra and Masterworks Chorus.
