Paul Katz, the founding cellist of the Cleveland Quartet and director of the Professional String Quartet Training Program at Boston’s New England Conservatory, has created cellobello.com, a free website for cellists of all ages and performance levels. The website documents Katz’s teaching methods and philosophy and includes blogs and a chat room, listings of jobs and competition opportunities, and a look at great cellists of the past. The “Cello Lessons” section of the site features footage in Katz’s studio with students at NEC, filmed in HD and edited principally by Boston PBS station WGBH. The “Legacy” section features tributes to Katz’s teachers: Bernard Greenhouse, Gregor Piatigorsky, Gabor Rejto, Leonard Rose, and Janos Starker. Bloggers will include prominent cellists such as Alisa Weilerstein, Yeesun Kim, and Brant Taylor. Also scheduled for release later this year is a companion PBS film, directed by Josh Aronson.
