“The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra presents an intriguing and inspired concert program when Lauri Porra, great-grandson of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, joins the NBSO Sunday, Nov. 26,” reads an unsigned Thursday (10/26) article in Wicked Local Marion (Plymouth, MA). “Under the direction of Maestro Yaniv Dinur, the orchestra will perform the U.S. premiere of Porra’s Entropia: Concerto for Electric Bass Guitar and Orchestra. In addition to being a composer, Porra is a formidable bassist known for his work with the band Stratovarius, and he will be the featured guest artist in his own concerto. The program also includes his great-grandfather’s powerful Symphony No.1, filled with passionate melodies and soaring harmonies. Sibelius was and is a national hero whose enduring influence is responsible for Finland’s astounding number of great composers, conductors and performers.” The concert is the second of four 2017-18 New Bedford Symphony Orchestra classical programs at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford. The NBSO also performs two pops concerts during the season, offers educational programs for 30,000 area students, and operates five youth orchestra ensembles and a youth chamber music program.
