Strangers on the Earth, a new documentary film about cellist Dane Johansen’s 600-mile journey along Europe’s Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail in 2014, will have its first U.S. movie-theater screenings in May and June in New York City and Los Angeles. The film, directed by Tristan Cook, opens on May 4 at Cinema Village in Manhattan and on June 1 at Laemmle’s Music Hall in L.A. Johansen, a cellist in the Cleveland Orchestra since 2016, treks along the trail while carrying his cello on his back, stopping along the way to meet fellow travelers and perform Bach’s Cello Suites in 36 ancient churches on the route. The Camino de Santiago is a network of paths leading to a shrine in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, in existence since the ninth century.
