The New York Philharmonic “continues its forward momentum … as the Deborah Borda-Jaap van Zweden agenda evolves into its third season,” writes Susan Elliott in Wednesday’s (2/12) Musical America. “The 2020-21 season, announced today, sees a slew of premieres, eight of them by women composers under ‘Project 19’; the arrival of pianist/composer Chick Corea as artist-in-residence; a two-week ‘Takeover’ by acclaimed vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth; a full staging of György Kurtág/Samuel Beckett’s Fin de partie (Endgame) in its U.S. premiere; and the continuation of the orchestra’s efforts to be an active member of the community via ‘Phil the Hall’ ($5 tickets for community workers, such as police and firemen, and their families), and Concerts in the Parks…. Principal trombone Joseph Alessi will be the soloist for the debut of Corea’s new Trombone Concerto…. Van Zweden will celebrate his 60th birthday with a special concert on December 16 … and by taking the orchestra on a five-city tour of Asia (assuming the area’s clean bill of health) in March…. There are numerous family and educational concerts, with distinctive categories that start with three-year-olds (Very Young People’s Concerts) and progress up through pre-college (NY Phil Youth Mentorship Program).”
