“Having avoided the flood of streams last summer with its own, live Bandwagon, the New York Philharmonic’s winter-time response to the pandemic is, inevitably, an on-demand platform, NYPhil+,” writes Susan Elliott in Monday’s (2/8) Musical America (subscription required). “The service mixes newly recorded performances with recent and vintage events, ranging from Pierre Boulez conducting Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 in 1975 to Jaap van Zweden leading the 2018 premiere of Julia Wolfe’s Fire in My Mouth. Also on the platform are five decades’ worth of Live from Lincoln Center telecasts…. There will also be concerts recorded specifically for the platform. The first, captured January 16 at St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Ave., is David Robertson conducting Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9, Jeunehomme, with Emanuel Ax as soloist. Also on the program: Jessie Montgomery’s Banner, R. Strauss’s Wind Serenade in E-flat, and Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro. Coming weeks will see new concerts led by Tito Muñoz … a new Young People’s concert; and an as-yet-untitled (and recorded) event led by Music Director Jaap van Zweden that features Habib Azar as director. A number of [newly recorded] chamber music concerts will also be available…. Cost is $4.99 per month or $50.00 per year.”
