The New York Philharmonic has released details of its new $5 Phil the Hall concerts for New York’s first responders, volunteers, and other service professionals, taking place on April 4, 5, and 6 at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. Music Director Jaap van Zweden and the orchestra will be joined by Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin, a soprano and composer, who will serve as host for a program featuring music by Beethoven, Bernstein, Copland, Steven Stucky, and Wagner, as well as world premieres by students participating in the Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program: Paloma Dineli-Chesky’s Rising and Mack Scocca-Ho’s Ociantrose. (Nia Franklin is profiled in the current issue of Symphony magazine.) Also performing will be the Westminster Symphonic Choir. All New York City service professionals are invited to attend Phil the Hall, and fifty groups have accepted the invitation, including the FDNY, the NYPD, the Police Athletic League, the Acacia Network, the Bowery Mission, Bronx Council on the Arts, El Centro del Inmigrante, Coalition for the Homeless, Henry Street Settlement, and more. President and CEO Deborah Borda said: “We hope that people will come to our home and experience what’s so special about the New York Philharmonic.”
