Contemporary-music fans can be “faced with Solomonic choices” in New York City, writes Bruce Hodges in Thursday’s (12/14) MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). On October 1, “Choices ranged from harpist Bridget Kibbey and pianist Siwoo Kim at National Sawdust … to the renowned Momenta Quartet kicking off its third annual festival at Dixon Place [featuring] a bravura Spanish translation of Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte, with Cuban rapper Telmary Diaz…. A few days later came the first night of Boulez’s Répons at the Park Avenue Armory, with the Ensemble Intercontemporain.” Election Day concert choices included “East Coast Chamber Ensemble at the DiMenna Center, a brilliant recital by cellist Friedrich Kleinhapl and pianist Andreas Woyke at the Austrian Cultural Forum … and the New Juilliard Ensemble in works by Mauricio Kagel and Giya Kancheli…. As a postscript, live streaming means more and more events can be experienced anywhere…. On December 2, flutist Claire Chase presented six hours of music by 20 composers from her ‘Density 2036’ project, at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Dipping into a few minutes of the live webcast made one marvel at the avalanche of new music—available everywhere.”
