“The latest addition to the growing roster of youth orchestras—the Concertgebouworkest Young—will make its symphonic debut with concerts in Amsterdam and Brussels in late August,” writes Anthony Brown in Monday’s (8/19) Musical America (subscription required). “For the first three weeks of August, 72 instrumentalists, ages 14 to 17, have gathered from throughout Europe at the Akoesticum training center for music, dance, and theater in the Dutch city of Ede. Training sessions at Akoesticum are intensive and include sectional and orchestral rehearsals, coaching sessions and workshops, lessons from members of the Royal Concertgebouw, and chamber music sessions. The young musicians are also taking part in a personal development program, offered in collaboration with the United World Colleges Nederland, designed to promote community and democratic ideals through music. Young is tuition-free…. The culminating events of the month’s work are pair of concerts on Aug. 23 and 24 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and at Flagey in Brussels respectively. Under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado, Young will perform the world premiere of Detlev Glanert’s newly commissioned Idyllium, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Julian Rachlin as soloist, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.”
