The Austin Symphony Orchestra in Texas has selected “Take My Music,” a painting by Emma Brotherton, as the winner of an art competition undertaken in connection with the orchestral centennial celebration in 2011. Brotherton is a ninth-grade student at McCallum High School in Austin; her abstract painting of a cello, in warm yellows and oranges, will appear on the cover of the Austin Symphony’s program at its Centennial Gala Concert on April 28, 2011, featuring guest soloist Itzhak Perlman. Brotherton’s painting was chosen from more than 30 entries submitted by Austin Independent School District high school students for the competition, which specified that entrants incorporate the cello in their artworks. An image of the cello appears in the ASO’s marketing and other materials this season, featuring a cello that was played by Carl T. Widen at the orchestra’s first concert in 1911. Widen played with the orchestra for more than 30 years and served as the organization’s second president, in 1941.
