In Indyweek.com (North Carolina) on Thursday (11/20) Grayson Haver Currin previews an innovative performance of Schubert by a quartet of North Carolina Symphony musicians at the Raleigh nightclub Kings. “Most of the North Carolina Symphony’s programming could be described as either maintaining the accepted repertoire or introducing new people—kids, even—to the idea that such a repertoire exists.… But in the last few years, the Symphony seems to have expanded that scope in careful, measured steps…. Tonight’s program, which puts a canonical classic in a rock club and revisits it with the help of an electronic experimentalist, might be their boldest move forward so far. A string quartet of symphony musicians will play Schubert’s dramatic, dynamic Death and the Maiden, with the wide-angled, woozy textures of Raleigh producer Blursome adding an element of the unexpected. If it sounds like something New Music Raleigh might try (if they played the work of dead composers, that is), there’s a reason. That’s NMR cofounder Karen Strittmatter Galvin with the violin.”
