In Friday’s (4/4) St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Sarah Bryan Miller writes, “Bernard Schneider, onetime principal trombone with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, died March 30, 2014, in Naples, Fla. He was 87. Mr. Schneider was a student at the Juilliard School in New York when he was drafted into the Army’s artillery division during World War II. He took his trombone with him, and won a spot in an Army band.” Following the war, Schneider earned a degree in music from the University of Miami, performed with the Metropolitan Opera, and spent three years (1949-52) as principal trombone in the Israel Philharmonic. “He joined the SLSO in 1956, serving as principal trombone until his retirement in 1988. During his years in St. Louis, he also taught privately and at several colleges, including Washington University in St. Louis and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.” Schneider is survived by his wife, Roslyn; a daughter, Alison Schneider; and two sons, Ari and William.
