In Sunday’s (5/2) Reno Gazette-Journal (Nevada), Forrest Hartman writes, “In many ways, Andrea Lenz has defined the oboe for fans of the Reno Philharmonic, Reno Chamber Orchestra and Nevada Opera Orchestra. Locals have certainly heard other players, but Lenz has held the principal oboe chair of all three groups for most of the past 35 years. That makes her decision to abandon that role a big one. Lenz resigned her post as principal oboist with the Reno Philharmonic in 2009, and she played her last gig with the chamber orchestra on April 11. On May 9, she says, she will retire as a professional orchestral oboist after playing with Nevada Opera Orchestra on its ‘An Evening with Hope Briggs’ concerts. Lenz is not leaving music altogether, she said, but she is convinced that it’s the right time to retire from the regular demands of orchestral playing. … Lenz, who has worked at the University of Nevada, Reno since 1976, is retaining her post as chair of the Department of Music and Dance, and she will continue to teach oboe to students.”
