“The assistant professor of oboe at the University of Oklahoma School of Music since 2011, Dan Schwartz also is in his seventh year as second oboe and English horn player for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic,” writes Brandy McDonnell in Sunday’s (1/28) Oklahoman. “The avid performer will be featured as a soloist for the OKC Philharmonic’s Classics concert Saturday … where he will perform … composer Jean Sibelius’ atmospheric 1890s tone poem ‘The Swan of Tuonela.’… ‘There aren’t that many solo works for English horn, and this is one of the grand ones,’ said OKC Philharmonic Music Director Joel Levine, who will conduct the fifth Classics concert of the 2017-18 season…. Saturday’s concert will be one of the last for Levine, who will retire as the OKC Philharmonic’s founding music director after conducting the Classics season finale May 12.” In addition to the Sibelius, “Levine’s penultimate program as Oklahoma City’s maestro will include … Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.’ Not only is Dvořák’s seventh ‘the most profound of his symphonies,’ Levine said, but it’s also the first symphony the maestro conducted when he was engaged in 1979 by the Oklahoma Symphony, the OKC Philharmonic’s predecessor.”
