“The Orchestra of Northern New York will celebrate 30 years when it presents its 2017-2018 season beginning this fall,” reads an unsigned Thursday (7/27) article in Northcountrynow.com (Potsdam, N.Y.). “Eleven performances of five concerts of live orchestral music, including two classical, two pops and a Baroque concert, will be performed in Potsdam, Massena and Watertown. Music director and conductor Kenneth Andrews founded the orchestra in 1988, defying all odds that a professional symphony orchestra could be sustained in such a rural region of the state.… The season begins with … Mozart’s Overture to ‘The Marriage of Figaro.’ Brahms’ ‘Variations on a Theme by Haydn’ follows, with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 rounding out the program.” A December holiday pops program will feature a chorus “featuring high school students from St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis Counties [and] internationally acclaimed tenor Donald George.” Bach’s Cantata B.W.V. 42, Brandenburg Concerto Nos. 3 and 4, plus the Orchestral Suite No. 1 will be performed in January, and April’s program will include Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (“Italian”), and a piece featuring the winner of the orchestra’s annual young artist competition. Free pops concerts in July will feature patriotic and film music.
