A report in Wednesday’s (9/22) Vancouver Sun states, “A new prize to recognize promising young performers of classical music has been created, thanks to the generous support of an Ottawa music enthusiast and arts community volunteer. When Michael Measures died in 2008, the longtime patron of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra left a $1-million bequest to the Canada Council for the Arts. … The new award will be called the Michael Measures Prize and will be awarded in partnership with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. It will be awarded annually to a single recipient from income generated by Measures’ endowment. … The youth orchestra organization will coordinate and supervise the administration of the competition and selection of the annual winner. A recipient between the ages of 16 and 22 will be chosen from those who have successfully completed the orchestra’s annual summer training program. The first Canada Council Michael Measures Prize will be awarded in 2011 during the orchestra’s summer touring program and will provide a young musician with $15,000 to help build his or her career.”
