A series of recorded performances entitled “Sonic Trails” will take place this spring and summer at Earl W. Brydges Artpark State Park at the Niagara Gorge, NY. The series launches on May 15 with Cover the Water by composer/producer/multimedia artists The Holladay Brothers. Similar to Ellen Reid’s recent Soundwalk audio experience in NYC’s Central Park and other outdoor spaces, Cover the Water and some of the other “Sonic Trails” performances will map music to a physical landscape, using GPS and an app to alter the music as the listener explores their surroundings. Also planned is Her Moccasins Talk: Honoring all our Relations, curated by Michele-Elise Burnett along with local First Nations storytellers and singers. On June 19, musician and Silkroad Ensemble Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens will collaborate with cellist Yo-Yo Ma for Juneteenth: From the Past To the Living Present, combining banjo, folk music, and storytelling on a guided walk focusing on contributions of African Americans on American culture, music and history. In the summer, Paul Miller (aka DJ Spooky) will curate an electronic-music experience, and the Kronos Quartet will perform new music by Susie Ibarra, Hawa Kasse, Aftab Darvishi, and Nicole Lizée. Artpark is a collaboration between the New York State Parks and the cultural nonprofit Artpark & Company.
