“The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will honor former music director Lorin Maazel in the opening weekend of its classical subscription season in September,” reports Elizabeth Bloom in Thursday’s (8/21) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Mr. Maazel, who was music director from 1988-96, died in July. The orchestra will perform the Air from Bach’s Suite No. 3 in Mr. Maazel’s memory. An archival exhibit of mementos from his time in Pittsburgh will remain on display through the third classical subscription concert. Led by music director Manfred Honeck, the concerts take place Sept. 19-21 and also feature works by Mason Bates, Rachmaninoff and Berlioz. Pianist Valentina Lisitsa will solo on Rachmaninoff’s ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.’ ”
