Camerata PYP, the Portland Youth Philharmonic’s chamber orchestra, performs a free concert at Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Oregon on January 30, featuring works by Jewish composers. Joining the orchestra and Music Director David Hattner will be Congregation Beth Israel’s cantor, Ida Rae Cahana, performing as vocalist, and sixteen-year-old pianist Jesse Nieman. Nieman is a student at Portland Community College and in addition to playing piano, plays violin in PYP’s Conservatory Orchestra; he is a student of Inés Voglar Belgique, Oregon Symphony’s assistant principal second violin and conductor of PYP’s Young String Ensemble. The concert will include music by Felix Mendelssohn, Ernest Bloch, Gerald Finzi, Julius Chajes, and David Avshalomov, son of Jacob Avshalomov, PYP’s music director from 1954 to 1995. Cahana hopes the performance will excite and inspire more young people to try expressing themselves through music. “Hearing a group of excellently prepared peers is a great way to do that,” she says. “This concert gives audiences a variety of seldom heard, beautiful music in one of the most gorgeous worship/concert spaces in Portland.”
