The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra has announced eight programs for 2014-15, its 70th season, also the nineteenth season for Music Director Larry Rachleff. The season will open in September at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence with a concert featuring John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Augustin Hadelich. Also planned for the season are symphonies by Beethoven and Sibelius, Handel’s Messiah, Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances Op. 45, and Ravel’s Boléro. The season will conclude in May with a commissioned world premiere by Pierre Jalbert, a New England native, in honor of the orchestra’s 70th year, on a program that also includes Orff’s Carmina Burana, with the Providence Singers. All eight concerts take place on Saturdays at Veterans Memorial Auditorium; before four of the concerts, there will be Friday rush-hour concerts of the same program, and the remaining four will be performed at Friday open rehearsals.
