Richmond, Virginia Mayor Levar Stoney has proclaimed October 28, 2017 to be “Richmond Symphony Day,” marking 60 years since the orchestra’s founding in 1957. The mayor will attend the orchestra’s 60th-anniversary concert the same date at Carpenter Theatre, with Music Director Steven Smith conducting Steven Stucky’s Jeu de timbres, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, and Chris Brubeck’s Travels in Time for Three with the string trio Time for Three. In addition to performing concerts at the Carpenter Theatre, the orchestra also offers educational programs in area public schools and performs free concerts through its Big Tent Initiative, partnering with neighborhood associations, environmental groups, local businesses, social service charities, the faith community, and local schools. The orchestra’s executive director is David Fisk.
