“When the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra announced its 2018/19 season Tuesday night … eclecticism and variety once again reigned,” reads an unsigned Tuesday (1/30) article in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (N.Y.). “Beethoven makes his appearance with the beloved Eroica symphony…. Mozart makes the list … as do Mahler … Dvořák … and the blockbuster Carmina Burana. But family-friendly concerts fill the season as well [with] a continuation of the Harry Potter Film Concert series … Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy [and] the ongoing OrKIDStra series, with four offerings throughout the season…. Leslie Odom Jr. [will appear] with the orchestra in January 2019.” Music Director Ward Stare said he is “ ‘particularly looking forward to the live recording of Jennifer Higdon’s new Harp Concerto in the fall’ [a co-commission featuring] harpist Yolanda Kondonassis…. Rochester audiences will preview it at this season’s world premiere performance, May 10 and 12.” A program in November will celebrate Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik’s “25th season with the orchestra. It features Tyzik’s 2016 Jazz Concerto for Violin and Orchestra with concertmaster Juliana Athayde, for whom he wrote the piece, as well as his Images: Musical Impressions of an Art Gallery from 2012.”
