Saturday (5/15) on ROC Now, Mary Chao and Erich Van Dussen write, “At the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s Symphony Showhouse this year, all the rooms’ designs are inspired by pieces of music from Carl Orff to George Gershwin. More than 40 designers worked on 54 spaces in neighboring new-builds at the Cottages at Malvern Hills, a new upscale development by Ketmar Corp. off Thornell Road in Pittsford. The homes—adding up to 8,500 square feet of space—will be open to the public from May 22 through June 13 in this major fundraising event for the RPO. … Visitors to the ‘duet of homes’ will stroll through such concepts as a child’s bedroom inspired by ‘Jupiter’ from Gustav Holst’s The Planets; a rec room designed by the Strong National Museum of Play and set to ABBA’s ‘The Name of the Game’; a powder room tuned to a piece by Debussy; and a walk-in pantry and dining room flavored by ‘Tara’s Theme’ from the film Gone With the Wind. About 4,500 to 7,000 people tour the showcase, raising more than $100,000, says Carole Avery Webster, co-chair of the show houses. The money supports the RPO’s educational outreach and community concert series.”
