In Friday’s (4/3) Saginaw News (Michigan), Janet I. Martineau writes, “From a field of 160 candidates, the Polish-born conductor of the National Philharmonic in the Washington D.C. area and the Michigan-born assistant conductor of the Kansas City Symphony are headed to Saginaw next season. Piotr Gajewski and Steven Jarvi are among the six candidates vying for the position of music director/conductor of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra—replacing Patrick Flynn, who died last fall before the current season began. … In addition to Gajewski and Jarvi, next season’s third candidate is Brett Mitchell, the assistant conductor of the Houston Symphony and Orchestre National de France. This season so far has seen Andre Raphel Smith, a native of North Carolina and conductor of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra in West Virginia, and Darryl One, a native of Chicago and director of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in Texas. And in May, it will cap off with Bulgarian-born Milen Nachev, conductor of the Philharmonia Bulgarica in Sofia and a resident of Midland.”
