In Wednesday’s (10/5) San Antonio Express-News, David Hendricks writes, “San Antonio Symphony musicians and management have agreed to start the 2011-12 performance season while continuing to negotiate a contract, the two sides said Tuesday. The musicians will receive a base pay of $1,045 per week, which was the pay level specified under the final year of the just-expired contract, ‘until further notice,’ violinist Craig Sorgi, who heads the musicians negotiating committee said on behalf of the 72 musicians, after Tuesday morning’s season-starting rehearsal. The symphony will perform Young People’s Concerts this week, starting today, and is scheduled to perform its first classical subscription concerts Oct. 14-15 at the Majestic Theatre. ‘We’re going to have a symphony board meeting at the end of this week,’ said Jack Fishman, symphony president and CEO. ‘We will continue to talk (to the musicians). The concerts will go on as scheduled.’ ‘The talks are still productive and civilized,’ Sorgi said Tuesday. ‘The future is still unwritten, but we’re very hopeful.’ … The symphony is struggling to survive as a capital campaign continues to finance the planned $195 million Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, under construction at the site of the former Municipal Auditorium downtown.”
