The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) has received a STEAMConnect Da Vinci Award for its music education programs in San Diego schools. The award was given by the San Diego-based nonprofit STEAMConnect, which supports the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) movements in the U.S. In 2010, SDYS developed a pilot afterschool music program at two elementary schools; the program now covers the entire Chula Vista Elementary School District of six schools, and will add five more schools in the 2015-16 school year. In receiving the award during STEAMConnect’s annual conference on March 4, SDYS President Dalouge Smith said, “We have received substantial recognition over the past several years for rebuilding music and arts education in the schools of Chula Vista and beyond. At the Youth Symphony we witness the power of STEAM every year as large numbers of our musicians balance their participation in music with science fairs, math Olympiads, and internships at local research institutes.”
