“The [Sarasota-based] contemporary chamber group ensembleNewSRQ is returning to live performances for the 2021-22 season, which will include five concerts featuring commissions, premieres and new works,” writes Jay Handelman in Sunday’s (8/15) Sarasota Herald-Tribune (FL). The ensemble’s founders and co-artistic directors are Sarasota Orchestra Principal Second Violin Samantha Bennett and Dallas Symphony Orchestra Principal Percussion George Nickson, who are married. “The new season will feature four premieres of commissioned works by composers Max Grafe, Elizabeth A. Baker, Sebastian Currier and Tyson J. Davis, and a variety of collaborations with visiting groups and individual artists. The concerts will be presented live at First Congregational Church [in] Sarasota, and will be available for livestreaming.… Concerts resume Oct. 11 with … the world premiere of [Grafe’s] ‘Shadow Theatre’ … along with the Florida premiere of Christopher Cerrone’s ‘Don’t Look Down’ and Yaz Lancaster’s ‘Sequoia.’ … The season’s final concert on April 18, features ‘Waves’ by … Sebastian Currier … based on a book by Virginia Woolf and features soprano, small ensemble and electronics. The concert also includes works by Lancaster, Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Patrick Harlin.” Other composers include Andreia Pinto-Correia, Freya Wayley-Cohen, Du Yun, Gerard Grisey, Philip Hurel, and Nina C. Young.
