“In June 2016, the Seattle Symphony will perform overseas for just the second time in its 112-year history. The tour will take the symphony to China and South Korea—and on that tour will be the symphony’s new artist-in-residence, world-renowned pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet,” writes Michael Upchurch in Friday’s (2/13) Seattle Times. “Music director Ludovic Morlot will delve again into the classical-music repertoire of his native France, with performances of works by Messiaen, Dutilleux and Fauré…. Principal guest conductor Thomas Dausgaard follows up his Sibelius marathon this season with a performance of Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 1 (‘The Inextinguishable’) to honor the Danish composer’s 150th birthday…. ‘In the White Silence,’ an epic meditative work by John Luther Adams … is part of the late-night [untitled] series…. Sonic Evolution goes from one concert to two. First up, Seattle painter Jacob Lawrence inspires Derek Bermel’s ‘Migration Series’ concerto for jazz band and orchestra.… That first concert also features Seattle vocalist Shaprece and a first symphony from Seattle’s Wayne Horvitz … The second Evolution involves collaborations with filmmaker Bill Morrison and pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama and Seattle band Fly Moon Royalty…. Nine Symphony commissions and co-commissions, including works by Anna Clyne and Giya Kancheli, will deliver contemporary fare.”
