Idaho’s Boise Philharmonic has announced seven candidates for music director, each of whom will lead one program during the orchestra’s 2016-17 season. The candidates are Aram Demirjian (currently associate conductor of the Kansas City Symphony), Andrés Franco (assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Signature Symphony in Tulsa, Oklahoma), Eric Garcia (associate professor of music at Oklahoma City University and previously assistant conductor of the Seattle Symphony and associate conductor of the Eastern Music Festival in North Carolina), Keitaro Harada (associate conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony, the Richmond (VA) Symphony, and Arizona Opera in Phoenix), Michelle Merrill (assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra), Brett Mitchell (who has served as both assistant and associate conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra), and Alastair Willis (music director of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra). During each candidate’s week in Boise, he or she will be interviewed and assessed by the orchestra, Philharmonic staff, members of the audience, and the search committee. Audience members may offer opinions via printed ballots inserted in the program book, on the BPA website, or by using QR Codes to link directly to an online ballot. Robert Franz led his final concert as the orchestra’s music director in April.
