Leaders from seven orchestras have been selected to participate in The Chief Executive Program, a new two-year program of National Arts Strategies. The orchestra participants—from an international group of 100 culture professionals from museums, opera houses, public-broadcasting stations, ballet, and theater companies, among others—are Ayden Adler (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra), Celina Chin (Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra), Michael Henson (Minnesota Orchestra), Sarah Lutman (The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra), Anne Parsons (Detroit Symphony Orchestra), Deborah Rutter (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), and Matthew Van Besien (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). The program, described by NAS President and CEO Russell Willis Taylor as “the beginning of an international conversation about the arts and culture and their role in creating value outside of commercial markets,” launched in October and November with multi-day meetings at the University of Michigan exploring “The New Nature of Competition,” and continues later this season with events at the University of Texas/Austin and Harvard Business School. In addition to in-person meetings, the program encompasses an online discussion and resource area and an online Investment Marketplace, where leaders collaborate on innovative projects using a crowd-funding model. Executives were chosen for the program from a pool of open applications and nominations from industry stakeholders.
