In Thursday’s (12/9) Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania), Ellen Hughes writes, “The Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra recently received a jolt of invigorating tonic from Tara Simoncic, its new conductor and music director. Simoncic also fills the position of assistant conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, understudying Maestro [Stuart] Malina for all concerts, ready to jump in at a moment’s notice if necessary. This weekend is your first chance to hear the orchestra perform since Simoncic began her job at the start of this season. Slated as a ‘Holiday Spectacular,’ the orchestra also plays works not directly associated with the holidays, including the Overture to ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Strauss and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances. … As music director, Simoncic has great plans for the orchestra, involving more challenging repertoire, developing smaller and younger ensembles, playing at different venues. Her successful experience as a conductor with the Norwalk Youth Symphony in Connecticut for nine years has given her ideas she’d like to implement in her new job.”
