The South Bend Symphony Orchestra has announced that its immersive Octet audio installation will travel to the Heartland Artist Gallery in Plymouth, Indiana, where it will remain through the end of December 2021. Octet, originally a response to the global pandemic, aims to recreate the feeling of being in an orchestra by situating the listener within a three-dimensional soundscape. To bring Octet to realization, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra collaborated with the Riverlights Music Festival, the South Bend Civic Theater, and the South Bend Museum of Art. Musicians from the South Bend Symphony Orchestra recorded their parts, and engineers Matt Teters and Eric Friedlander fed the signals through stereo speakers playing recorded renditions of the music; the work was first displayed in November 2020 at the Morris Performing Arts Center in downtown South Bend. The installation moved in March 2021 to a vaccination clinic at Saint Joseph Health System Mishawaka Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana. Masks are required at this December’s installation at Heartland Artist Gallery, and physical distancing is encouraged.
