This winter the Sphinx Organization will host “Sphinxcon,” its inaugural conference bringing together performing arts leaders and practitioners to discuss the topic of diversity in the arts. Among the goals for the conference, which takes place in Detroit from February 15 to 17, are building connections and encouraging critical thinking about how the performing arts sector approaches diversity; presenting a broad view of how diversity is happening in different disciplines; developing contacts and resources; and empowering arts groups and leaders to take action. Among the 34 speakers at the conference will be Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, as well as representatives from Theatre Communications Group, Dance USA, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Americans for the Arts, Knight Foundation, Urban Bush Women, National Association of Latino Arts & Culture, and Center for Black Music Research. The Sphinx Organization was founded in 1996 by violinist Aaron Dworkin to encourage the participation of blacks and Latinos in the field of classical music.
