In Connecticut, the Stamford Symphony Orchestra recently joined together with Stamford’s Basilica of St. John the Evangelist Church for a benefit concert that raised $24,000 for the charity Hope for Haiti. The April 29 concert at the church, led by Stamford Symphony Music Director Eckart Preu, featured a Creole translation of Mozart’s Requiem that the orchestra commissioned for the occasion. Translator Gertha Laurent has donated the new translation for public use, and it will be posted online and made available for use by other orchestras and choirs. Stamford Symphony musicians and members of the Choir of the Basilica donated their services for the concert. The Grace J. Fippinger Foundation of Darien, Connecticut, donated $10,000 to support the concert. “It was incredibly heart-warming to see varied constituencies from throughout Stamford work together to benefit our Haitian neighbors,” said Elaine Carroll, the Stamford Symphony’s general manager. “They produced this concert without spending a single dollar; every penny raised is on its way to Haiti.”
