The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is now accepting applications for its Young Artists Competition. The competition takes place in three rounds. The preliminary round consists of an online registration and judging process running through December 31, 2018. The live competition will be on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, 2019, with a closed second round on Friday, and a public finals concert on Saturday in the Belding Theater. Awards will be given to the top three finalists during the May 18 performance. The first-place winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000, as well as the possibility of performing at an additional Hartford Symphony event. The second- and third-place winners will receive $750 and $500, respectively. All three winners will also receive tickets to a Masterworks concert of their choice. To be eligible, students must be Connecticut residents in grades 9-12 during the 2018-19 school year, cannot be a previous first-place winner of the Hartford Symphony’s Young Artists Competition, and must play one of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, piano, or harp.
