“The Sun Valley Music Festival has confirmed that its full ensemble of musicians—as well as many guest artists—will return to the Sun Valley Pavilion for a fully in-person concert series this summer,” writes Chris Melville in Wednesday’s (3/10) Idaho Mountain Express (Ketchum, ID). “The festival’s 37th season is scheduled to kick off Monday, July 26 … presenting more than a dozen live, free-admission performances by its world-class orchestra, as well as a full roster of outreach and educational programs. Between projected vaccine rollout and last summer’s success with socially distanced pods on the Pavilion lawn, festival leaders determined they would be able to proceed with a safe season … Last year, the festival transitioned to an entirely virtual format, a tremendous undertaking that required new technology … and, as Music Director Alasdair Neale estimated it, roughly 1,000 labor hours per concert…. The first full Festival Orchestra concert will take place on Aug. 2 with [a] musical tribute to the frontline workers…. On Aug. 7, soprano Julia Bullock will join the orchestra in the world premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s ‘Freedom Songs.’ … Co-commissioners [include] the San Francisco Symphony, Boston Symphony, New Haven Symphony, Grand Teton Music Festival, Kansas City Symphony and Virginia Arts Festival.”
