In Thursday’s (10/14) Australian (Sydney), Ashleigh Wilson writes, “The YouTube orchestra, an international musical collaboration that came to life last year in New York, is being reborn and restaged in Australia. Organisers have chosen the Sydney Opera House for the next stage of the project. Musicians selected from an online audition will travel to Sydney in March next year for a week of rehearsals ahead of a performance by the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The concept was first tried in April last year, when more than 90 musicians from 30 countries performed at Carnegie Hall, led by Tilson Thomas. … Musicians have been invited to audition for the orchestra by uploading videos demonstrating their talents. The orchestra is also looking for musicians with the ability to improvise, with applicants required to upload videos of them improvising to a composition by American composer Mason Bates. Online auditions run until November 28. A panel of judges will then select a shortlist from which YouTube viewers can vote for their favourite musicians.”
