In Tuesday’s (1/12) Metro Spirit (Augusta, Georgia), Stacey Edison writes, “The Augusta Symphony Guild and Symphony Orchestra Augusta, under the direction of Music Director Shizuo Z Kuwahara, will hold its annual Symphony Youth Competition on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. The competition, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre at Augusta State University. The 2009-2010 competition features 16 entries from CSRA students, representing grades 7-12 and including the following instruments: piano, flute, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, viola, and violin. … Two senior winners will be featured in performance with Symphony Orchestra Augusta during the 2010-2011 season. This year’s senior winners will also receive cash awards of $500 for first place and $300 for second place. In the junior division, cash awards are $150 for first place and $50 for second place. The Augusta Symphony guild developed the Symphony Youth Competition in 1994 as a community outreach project.”
