The Los Angeles Philharmonic is hosting its fourth annual Take a Stand symposium on October 6 and 7 in Los Angeles, focusing on El Sistema-inspired programs throughout the U.S. The symposium marks the official launch of the National Take a Stand Festival initiative, a three-year project that commenced with a teacher training and development of a pilot program just prior to the symposium on October 2-4. The symposium opens with a keynote address by LA Phil violinist and community activist Vijay Gupta, and includes discussion groups, workshops, panels and conversations, and a free side-by-side concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, and teaching artists. The National Take a Stand Festival is a partnership among Venezuela’s FundaMusical, Aspen Music Festival and School, Bard College, and Longy School of Music of Bard College. Future National Take a Stand Festival programs include regional youth orchestra camps at Aspen Music Festival and School (June 24-29, 2016) and Bard College (August 16-20, 2016).
