“The Louisville Orchestra announced Monday that it has extended the contract for music director and conductor Teddy Abrams,” writes Elizabeth Kramer in Monday’s (12/5) Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY). “The new contract begins Sept. 1 and runs through Aug. 31, 2020…. When Abrams arrived in 2014, he took on his first major leadership role in an American orchestra after serving two years as assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony…. Andrew Kipe, the orchestra’s executive director … said … that Abrams has ‘really changed the conversation about the orchestra and its mission and direction.’ … Abrams’ new contract includes 18 weeks of works, including 12 weeks of Abrams working on the podium along with six weeks of community and administrative work.… Abrams has met, played with and included musicians throughout the community [and] overseen commissions of new music for the orchestra and developed the Festival of American Music [which this season] includes the premiere of his new work ‘Muhammad Ali Portrait.’ … The announcement of the renewal of Abrams’ contract comes less than two months before the orchestra plans to announce a new strategic plan and begin negotiating with its musicians for a long-term contract.”
