In Thursday’s (4/12) Toledo Blade (Ohio), Sally Vallongo reports that on Sunday, Toledo Symphony Music Director Stefan Sanderling “will receive a national award for successfully realizing [a new vision for] the orchestra when he is presented the Joseph Kilenyi Medal from the Bruckner Society of America. Announced last summer, this honor is bestowed on musicians who advance understanding and appreciation of music by Anton Bruckner. Most appropriately, the presentation will take place before the annual Special Concert in Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, where for seven years Sanderling and the orchestra have performed one of the emotional and expansive symphonies by the German composer. … John Berky, head of the Bruckner Society, who will present the medal Sunday, said, ‘What struck the Bruckner Society’s board of directors was the fact that Sanderling’s series of Rosary Cathedral concerts was quickly evolving into a complete Bruckner cycle. Extensive cycles of Bruckner symphonies are rarely done.’ … This year’s performance will be Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 in D Minor, known as ‘The Trumpet,’ a nickname Richard Wagner laid on his colleague Bruckner.”
